Navajo students reach their “fullest potential”
thanks to Novel

ROCK POINT, Ariz. —Students needing to catch up and graduate at Rock Point Community School used to have a difficult time getting back on track. An ineffective credit recovery program hampered student progress, as just over 60 percent of students graduated annually and daily attendance rates fluctuated.

School administrators knew they needed help.

In 2004, the K-12 Bureau of Indian Affairs contract school set out to find a new way to address the problem, carefully reviewing best teaching practices and intervention strategies.

After reviewing a host of education companies, Rock Point Community School chose EdOptions™ to provide the powerful Web-based tools it needed to create a summer credit recovery program.

Rock Point started its program in 2005 with 12 Dine’ (Navajo) students—a significant percentage of the school’s student population.
 
With the help of Novel, most students completed the courses needed to graduate. The success had a dramatic impact on the school’s graduation rate which rose from 63 percent in 2003-2004 to 89 percent for the 2004-2005 school year.

The program also improved the school’s attendance rate.  School officials reported that students were present and on-time for the summer program nearly 93 percent of the time.

Such success prompted the school to expand Novel’s usage; offering the Web-based curriculum for pre-assessment and remedial instruction in core subjects during the regular academic year. Many students not only caught up, but accelerated their credit accrual and learning progress.
